New Year's Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK
Forecasters have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Go Ahead Despite Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the weather service.
Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, making warm wraps a necessity, as per forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- Travelers have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on trains and buses.
The Mercury Expected to Fall Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Alerts Issued
In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this meant the weather was expected to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
