A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
